YMCA Wirral has teamed up with the amazing Cheshire based charity Cheshire Buddies to deliver a series of waterways activity days, using our 65’ narrowboat Potential.

Cheshire Buddies, give children and young people with disabilities new experiences to enhance their lives, develop skills and to offer an opportunity to make friends and develop friendships in a safe environment.

YMCA Wirral CEO Nigel Hughes, himself a keen boater for many years, knows the remarkable value of the waterways, commented, “it is heartwarming to see the next generation of waterways users getting the opportunity to explore their local canal and river network, thanks to Cheshire Buddies fantastic support.  We are very lucky in Cheshire to have some incredibly dedicated Canal and River Trust staff who work hard to ensure our beautiful canals are maintained and accessible for everyone to enjoy and I feel, we are doing our bit in helping these young people get afloat to experience the wonders of our canal heritage and Cheshire’s beautiful countryside”.

Stephanie Lawley, from Central Cheshire Buddy Scheme, said she was really pleased how well the boat trips had been received by everyone who had taken part and added that the young people they were engaging with had commented that the canal trips definitely counted as a “best day out”.  The canal boat is brilliant.  The children love the calm effect of the water and just plodding along.
